In the wake of news that My Morning Jacket was going on hiatus, Billbaord is reporting that Jim James is going to be releasing a George Harrison tribute album under the name Yim Yames. As each of the members take off on their own side projects, Jim is being perhaps the most proactive of the group, set to release the Monsters of Folk album in September and the George Harrison tribute simply entitled “Tribute To” on August 4 on ATO. You may recognize the Yim Yames moniker after the release of their Record Store Day exclusive live record from their Louisville Waterfront/ear X-tacy appearance.
The 6 song EP consists of 4 songs from Harrison’s solo album “All Things Must Pass” and 2 that he wrote with the Beatles. The tracklist is below. The EP was as Jim was grieving Harrison’s death to help him cope, recorded with just an acoustic guitar only a few days after his death in 2001. I can’t help but feel that this is what we would have heard at the canceled Obama show, but perhaps I’m still just sad it didn’t happen.
UPDATE: Thanks to our reader Raj for finding “Behind that Locked Door” available for free download on YimYames.com. Note the website also claims there is a full length solo album to be released soon.
UPDATE 2: Kory over at 37Flood has pointed out that Billboard’s report of a Aug 4th release is inaccurate and that the YimYames.com website is saying the album will get a July 7th release.
Below is a note from Yim about the album:
Hello friends. Just like most everyone else under this crazy dome, I have been a fan of the Beatles since early childhood… But it wasn’t ’till sometime in ’99 that an old pal turned me on to “All Things Must Pass” and I quickly became even more enamored with the quiet beauty and majesty of all things George Harrison. He always seemed to be a beacon of good light unto the world, accomplishing the rare task of using his massive fortune and fame to promote peace – both within and around the World. I will always look up to and see him as a prime example of the healing power of music and how, in tune with it, all is possible.
The following are a selection of George’s songs I recorded back in 2001, a few days after he passed that were moving me so very much at the time… I recorded them live at above the Cadillac in Shelbyville, KY… On my cousin John’s “ol faithful” Fostex 8 track reel2reel, then overdubbed a banjitar or b. vox here or there. I find comfort knowing that all things must pass, but that as all things do pass their spirits are still out there moving us somewhere… doing what they do, just as real as they ever were in this physical world… I hear them singing and I feel them in my blood.
Thanks George for helping me to understand things just a lil bit better…
