There is no shortage of indie bands in the world right now, but there is a shortage of indie bands that are as fun as they should be. Rodeo Ruby Love out of Marion, IN is, by far, one of my favorite bands of the Midwest and one of the best shows you’ll get to see around here. Their ouevre is filled with lovable pop gems that just beg for hand-raising sing-alongs. You haven’t had this much fun singing along since you were a little pop-punker screaming your lungs out to MxPx’s “Move To Bremerton” or Green Day’s “Basketcase”.
They put out a record this past year called Rodeo Ruby Love vs. The Great American Cities on Crossroads of America Records and have been touring all over the states non-stop for the past 3 years or so. To give you some history on the band:
Rodeo Ruby Love started as the side-project of Zachary Melton, who was the bass-slinging and lead-singing dude in the now defunct post-hardcore band Away With Vega. Away With Vega built a huge following in the Midwest largely due to their killer guitar and bass lines and the dual vocals that Melton shared with Frank Schweikardt. Also in the band is the largely underappreciated guitar player Kyle Kammeyer (who is also in Rodeo) and drummer Stephen Boyd who replaced Burke Sullivan. Despite Vega’s popularity Zach and Frank decided to toy with side projects along the way; Melton with Rodeo and Frank with his self-named solo work. After AWV released A Year At Home (also on Crossroads of America Records), the band broke up and the guys focused on their now-burgeoning projects. Melton has penned 2 full-legths and 2 EPs in the past few years, and word has it that there are more on the way. Rodeo has shared the stage with virtually every band in the Midwest that matters and if you’ve ever seen them, you know why that is so.
They will be coming to Louisville on May 12th at Derby City Espresso with labelmates Chemic and the up-and-coming band out of Lexington Englishman. This will be a great show that starts at 8 and is $3.
Right now the band is on a Midwest tour. All the dates are after the break.
