Vinyl Purchase of the Week: Jeff Mangum – Live at Jittery Joe’s

In 2001, Neutral Milk Hotel’s, Jeff Mangum released this live album recorded at Athens bar Jittery Joe’s in 1997.  His performance is solo and he plays almost all of Neutral Milk Hotel songs, except for two, one of which was a Phil Spector cover, “I Love How You Love Me.”  He also played “Engine” which was the one song that he played on the Elephant Six tour in 2008.  The live recording is rough in the sense that there is a lot of crowd chatter (and a baby expressing excitement), but that is what makes it so great.  It lets you listen to the genius of Mangum in between NMH’s “On Avery Island” and “In the Aeroplane over the Sea” while playing at a coffee shop in front of a very lucky few.  If you are a fan of NMH, then this album is a must have.  I would even suggest buying it before “On Avery Island.”  I have no doubt you will enjoy this treasure from Jeff Mangum.
