The Watson Twins Take 5 for Kentucky

This week Louisville natives, Chandra and Leigh Watson, better known as The Watson Twins Take 5 for Kentucky!  They just recently signed to Vanguard Records (once home to Joan Baez and more recently Yonder Mountain String Band) and released a new album, Fire Songs, which is just amazing, in June.  In 1997, the Watson Twins moved from Louisville to L.A.’s Silverlake area; a neighborhood that Beck, Elliot Smith, Rilo Kiley (and my brother as of last Monday) have called home.  In 2006, the Watson Twins hooked up with Jenny Lewis (of Rilo Kiley & back-up in Postal Service’s Give Up), and created the album Rabbit Fur Coat as Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins.  That same year they released their own album, Southern Manners, which was a success by any standard (one song was even featured on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy).  They have also been on Letterman, Kimmel, Conan and Kilborn.  You get the idea.  These ladies are extremely talented and people have noticed.  They just played here in October, but they don’t currently have any local dates scheduled.  We hope they come back real soon.  Until then, enjoy their responses below…

1. What neighborhood did you grow up in?
J-town babeeee!
2. When did you start playing together? Did you have a different band name?
We started writing and playing together when we went to college. Our band name changed a million times, I don’t think any of them really stuck. But here’s a few of our genius name creations… love gasoline, Air Turned Blue, Joliet and Black Swan.
3. First show you played in Kentucky (plus any details you remember about it)?
Clifftons. I think we tried to block that experience.
4. First show outside of Kentucky·how did you book it?
Fitzgerald’s in Evansville, IN. I’m not even sure it was a legitimate venue. We played to a bunch of intoxicated college folk that could have cared less, but who doesn’t like dollar beers.
5. Favorite Kentucky band?
There is no way to pick a favorite…Kentucky has too many. Here is a few: Freakwater, the Rachels, Slint, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Crain, MMJ, Shipping News,….etc. We could go on all night.
