Review: Waterfront Wednesday w/ The Whigs – 4/23

Last night was WFPK’s first installment of Waterfront Wednesday. The Whigs, Wild Sweet Orange and Griffin House started the series off on the right foot. Just like a lot of festivals, the environment can be just as big of a draw as the musicians playing. It seemed that more people were there to listen to music along the waterfront and enjoy an evening outside, than to see the bands. That said, the bands still put on solid shows. I was there to see the Whigs because I missed them when they came to The Dame a while back. They just released an album in January, Mission Control, and played a few tracks from the new album. They also covered The Ramones’ “Swallow My Pride” which was a fan favorite. 37 Flood has MP3s of the show here.  Your next chance to see The Whigs around here (beside the Beale St. Fest on Derby Day in Nashville) is at Lolla in Chicago in August. For more info on future WFPK events on the Waterfront, read below…

The Whigs- Right Hand on My Heart
Wild Sweet Orange- Wrestle with God
Griffin House- Dance With Me

While not part of the Waterfront Wednesday series, WFPK will also be hosting Brett Dennen and Mason Jennings next Wednesday April 30th at Waterfront Park as part of Derby Week Riverfest. Brett Dennen was just here last month playing the Hard Rock Cafe and I HIGHLY recommend checking out his show. You probably already know enough about Mason Jennings. This will be a great show and is free if you have . Scott Miller will also be playing. The show starts at 7pm.

Brett Dennen- Ain’t No Reason
Mason Jennings- Ballad for My One True Love

Next month features Back Door Slam, Jim White and Mike Farris on May 28th.
