Review: Cabin Pre-Primary Election Show – 4/18

Close your eyes and picture the ideal music studio/hangout…what you are picturing is Cabin‘s ultra-disguised musical haven. Behind the facade of an apparently abandoned Christian center, was a two room studio complete with a plethora of pinatas musical instruments, tons of comfortable couches, a convenient beverage fountain, a ping-pong table, and a great audio system with a soundboard. The walls were covered with either carpet or art installments (and, in some cases, both). I could hear the disappointment in frontman, Noah Hewett-Ball’s voice when he informed the crowd that they are moving out of the location at the end of May (he didn’t say why).

After Enlou, out of Cincy, opened Cabin played a relaxed, nine song set. They opened with the title track of their newest EP, I Was Here, and immediately reminded me why I was a fan. The highlight was perhaps their cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” TfF music video for the song is below (fantastic). Cabin is one of my favorite local bands, so I spent most of the show watching instead of snapping pics (my explanation for the derth of pictures). The next chance you will get to see these guys in Louisville is at the Forecastle Fest, July 25-27.

Here are a few downloads courtesy of Basement Tapes (there is also some video of the session and an interview here)…

CABIN – I Was Here
CABIN – Musical Seats
CABIN – Cover Your Eyes
CABIN – Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears For Fears cover)

Since it was coined a Pre-Primary Election party, naturally, Cabin had a mock election set up, complete with candidate bios (see pic below). Voting was still continuing when I left, so if anyone knows who won, I would love to find out (my money is on Obama). The deadline to register for Kentucky’s Primary on May 20th is MONDAY, APRIL 21st (that is THIS MONDAY). For more info on how to register go here…
