Coliseum Takes 5 for Kentucky

We told you that Dawn Landes was up next, but we moved up Coliseum‘s Take Five since they are playing tomorrow night at Uncle Pleasant’s. The dichotomy between the two goes to show how diverse and rich Louisville’s music scene really is. Coliseum released an album last year, No Salvation, for which one review stated that “this Louisville trio pushes the limits of their inner speedometers and combines the thunder of Motorhead with the passion of a young Ian MacKaye.” Check out their sound for yourself below. After the show at UP’s they are heading out on a huge tour, stopping in too many countries to list. Singer/Guitarist Ryan Patterson took five and answered the questions below…

1. What neighborhood did you grow up in?

I was born in Lexington, grew up in Elizabethtown from age 8-18, lived in Louisville since then, in various neighborhoods… Clifton, Butchertown, Highlands, Germantown. My parents grew up in PRP and my grandparents still live there, I spent a lot of time skateboarding in Plainview when my other grandparents lived there when I was a kid. So, my roots in Louisville are spread out all over.

2. When did you start playing together? Did you have a different band name?

Coliseum formed in late 2003 and started touring in Spring 2004, always under this moniker.

3. First show you played in Kentucky?

Coliseum’s first show was March 14th, 2004 at the Keswick Democratic Club with Breather Resist, Kodan Armada, Cursed, Baroness, and Canopic. It was an amazing first show for Coliseum with so many great bands that we are still close with today. My personal first show ever played was in my parent’s basement in Elizabethtown at some point in the early to mid 90s. It was cool too, haha.

4. First show outside of Kentucky…how did you book it?

Coliseum had the benefit of my many years of touring with my previous bands prior to our forming, so when we went on our first tours we were either taken out by friends’ bands who were already established or I called up friends and promoters all over and booked the tours myself, as I have done the entire time I’ve been playing in bands.

5. Favorite Kentucky band?

I can’t list just one… Currently, I love Young Widows, Prideswallower, Shipping News, Bonnie Prince Billy. Classic Louisville bands I love are Squirrel Bait, Crain, Bastro, Guilt, Endpoint, and many others.
