We’ve Got a While on this one: Marissa Nadler @ Terrastock VII (June 19, 2008)

I wanted to go ahead & post this, despite its being so far far off, because Feist is this week, and people who like Feist should like Marissa. The event is Terrastock 7, and our very own Louisville, KY is getting to host this years. The festival started out in Providence, then went to San Francisco, London, Seattle, Boston, back to Providence, and now we get a turn.

“The message of underground music festivals like Terrastock can be summarized in two words: dig deeper. In some ways, the music at the festival, a mix of current underground bands and their obscure antecedents from the 1960’s and 70’s, wasn’t any more experimental than elements of what the Beatles and John Lennon or Pink Floyd and its former leader, Syd Barrett, did. But as a rule it promoted the music that didn’t get the acclaim, often because it was too bizarre or ahead of its time to win recognition.” – The New York Times (full review here)

This should be a good sign to everyone that Louisville is truly starting to get on the map when it comes to good music. I first listened to Marissa Nadler about a year ago when I’d heard a cover of a Bob Dylan song called “Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie“….a pretty rare one, and an odd one to cover because it’s not even a song, but a poem he’d written about Woody Guthrie while he was in the hospital in Brooklyn. I didn’t like it, but it had nothing to do with her voice. Listen below & you’ll see….her voice is beautiful, sometimes frightening even.

She’s got a few songs available for free on her MySpace account, and as always…here’s a sampling…

Marissa Nadler – Turquoise
Marissa Nadler – Flora Barone

That said, Feist is this Tuesday & I’ve got a press pass.

UPDATE: Dodge over at My Old Kentucky Blog has an interview with Marissa Nadler.
