There is still a while to go on this show, but I just heard that Murder By Death is coming to Louisville’s Uncle Pleasant’s on June 1st, so get it on your calendar (even if you saw them in Cincy last month). The band’s sound does not mirror its metal-esque name, but its message may be another story. Regarding their new album, Red of Tooth and Claw (released in March), singer/guitarist Adam Turla described it as a “Homer’s Odyssey of revenge, only without the honorable character at the center.” They actually are a quartet out of Bloomington, Indiana whose range of music is incredibly diverse, going from ambient rock to alt-rock to punk rock in a matter of minutes. MBD released their new record with Vagrant Records and I’m a big fan, but so are the critics. One review stated:
“Murder by Death are one of the most unique bands playing music today; it doesn’t matter what the genre, what the instrumentation, or even the lyrical content. Heavily influenced by Americana artists (that’s the correct term for country music by the by) as well as post-punk acts, Murder by Death have truly come into their own with Red of Tooth and Claw. The emotional intensity of this disc will leave you simultaneously dumbstruck and inspired to pick up a guitar, sing like Johnny Cash, and require your band to take on a cellist.”
Louisville’s The Ladybirds and Gasoline Heart are going to open. I’m guessing we have Max Balliet of The Ladybirds to thank for bringing MBD to Louisville as his older sister, Sarah (pictured above), plays cello and keys for MBD. This is the last stop on a long tour, so I’m hoping they look to finish with a bang. Tix are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

“…and require your band to take on a cellist”
Haha, I just read that. I’ve recently been playing cello in my friend’s band (got a show coming up at the Dame).

Also, just FYI, Sarah studied cello at YPAS/Manual.
Wow, I feel kind of lame for commenting so much on this post.
