Backseat Sandbar’s Top Ten Albums of 2007

Ok…so every other music blog is putting out their top albums of the year at about this time. I figured we should as well. I would like to preface our selections by stating that we are not declaring these albums as the best of the year; we are only saying which 10 albums we liked the best. Music is very personal and too often it gets categorized as “good” and “bad.” I think that certain sounds hit each individual differently depending on where they are in their life, so it is practically impossible to accurately rank any album. That said…here are our picks of the year:

Nick:

  1. The National- Boxer (BS has been on top of this since we were over at Blogspot.com in Feb 07) (I wish I beat Paste to this post)* (sample)
  2. Radiohead- In Rainbows (sample)
  3. Arcade Fire- Neon Bible* (sample)
  4. LCD Soundsystem- Sound of Silver* (sample)
  5. Bat For Lashes – Fur & Gold (sample) (thanks Zach!)
  6. Feist- The Reminder* (sample)
  7. Burial- Untrue (Sample)
  8. Iron & Wine- Shepherd’s Dog (Sample)
  9. The Shins- Wincing the Night Away (sample)
  10. !!!- Myth Takes* (Sample)

*2007 Concert in Louisville

(Note: You won’t see PB&J’s* Writer’s Block on this list (unlike Paste) because it released July 11, 2006. This release was, however, an import. The US release was Feb. 6, 2007, so I guess you can go either way. Regardless, that is why I didn’t add it.)

Cory:

  1. The National – Boxer (Start a War video)
  2. Kate Nash – Made of Bricks (Foundations video)
  3. The Go Find – Stars on the Wall (New Year video)
  4. LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver (All My Friends video)
  5. Arcade Fire – Neon Bible (Intervention video)
  6. Pelle Carlberg – In a Nutshell (Clever Girls Like Clever Boys…)
  7. Dan Deacon – Spiderman of the Rings (Ohio from the first album, Twacky Cats)
  8. Justice – V (D.A.N.C.E. video)
  9. The Weakerthans – Reunion Tour (Night Windows video)
  10. Ezra Furman & the Harpoons – Banging Down the Doors (Mothers Day video)
  11. tied for 10th: Battles – Mirrored (Atlas video)

  1. We did not collaborate on this…Boxer is just an amazing album. It wasn’t even close for me. Pop Quiz:

    1. What is Dan Deacon’s favorite color?
    2. Dan Deacon…older or younger than Britney Spears?

  2. 1. green

    2. older

  3. Comments:

    1. I will accept green, but teal would have been more accurate.

    2. You are right. Dan (26) is older than Brit, but not by much. Brit turned 26 today. That said, Dan looks like he 30+, but then again, so does Ms. Spears.

  4. ooh…hipster war!

Thank God Nick put Fiest on his top 10! Now Zach can’t direct his ire solely at me.

  5. you all have some great stuff on there i.e. justice, iron and wine, shins, arcade fire, lcd. i just can’t believe you all enjoyed that national album so much. nice lists though. keep up the good work fellas.

  6. neat list. But um… Nick, if you’re gonna set the criteria for PBJ, then shouldn’t you do the same for Bat for Lashes? Since it came out in September 2006.

  7. Paul,

I agree in part with your comment. However, I said you could go either way with PJB. PBJ’s import release was far more popular in 2006 than Fur & Gold, mainly because of the popularity of “Young Folks” (and it was released two months earlier). Fur and Gold wasn’t as widespread in 2006, making it, in my mind, a 2007 album. Additionally, the US release of Fur & Gold was at the end of July of this year, further solidifying it as an 07 album (as opposed to Feb for Writer’s Block).

Another, more simple reason, was that I had Writer’s Block in 06 and didn’t have Fur & Gold until my brother sent it to me this summer.

That said, thanks for the clarification, I should have addressed this more clearly in the original post.

  11. Hi everybody, some great names on here but I was wondering, how’s 2008 shaping up?

I have a contender for you. Dieter Schöön’s album Lablaza. It’s being given a release this year outside of Sweden which is where Dieter is from. I am totally overwhelmed by it, let me know what you think.

Here’s the link to his myspace:

& if you like those songs let me know if you want a link to the album.

    All the best, Carl
